General Information/Philosophy
Your City of Tallmadge Recreation Department in cooperation with the American Red Cross is offering this comprehensive, developmentally appropriate Swimming and Water Safety courses that teach you, your child or other family members how to swim skillfully, and think and act safely in, on and around the water.  The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of skills from the preceding level, except for Level 1 which has no prerequisites.  Students must be the proper age for each class no later than the first day of class.

The goal for each student is to progress at an individual and natural rate.  Sometimes students may successfully pass a level on the first try, while others may take over a year to pass.  It is natural for children to repeat certain levels in swimming.  Encourage your child to do his/her best.  Be patient with them.  Bring them swimming with you during open swimming so that you become part of the learning process.  We want to have swimmers who perform skills safely AND know how to safely conduct themselves in and around the water.

Parents and the students will be given a skills checklist at the end of the course that will detail those skills that have been mastered and those that will still need work.

Text Box: How Do We Choose A Swim Class?
Please use the class descriptions below to help choose a class.  The descriptions give a general idea of what students need to do before entering that class. After determining the class level that you need, please see the class schedules on the back of this page!

The next steps in registering for swim lessons would involve choosing a  swim class based on your child's current swimming ability.  See the chart below for help in making a selection.  Then, once you know the class you need, go to the list of classes offered by following the link at the bottom on this page.  Please note registration dates and fees charge are based on residency and whether or not you are a Maca Pool Pass holder.  Thanks!

Text Box: Frequently Asked Questions..
My child is not yet potty trained, what should he/she wear in the pool? Swim diapers are required  for anyone not yet potty trained.  These are available at most grocery or retail stores.  We also have a limited supply available at the courtesy counter for sale.
My child has goggles. Can she/he wear them to lessons? Level 1-3 are covering water adjustment and basic skills.  It is important that the perform these skills without the use of goggles, therefore goggles are not permitted. Goggles are permitted for some, but not all of the skills in levels 4-6.  For levels 4-6, please make sure your swimmer adjusts goggles before class.  Playing with goggles will not be permitted as it loses valuable class time for all students.
Can we make up missed classes? Sorry, we cannot offer make ups for classes that you miss because of your inability to attend.  If  we cancel classes for any reason we will attempt to offer make up classes the week after the session ends.
Does the swim lesson fee allow my family to remain on the deck of the pool and swim after class is over? No. Everyone, including pass holders, must exit the pool deck after lessons. If you wish to stay for open swim, you must check in at the Front Desk to be admitted.
Can I leave my child in lessons and leave the facility? Children ages 12 & under MUST have a parent in the facility during lessons.
