1. What is the difference between Temporary (TPO) and Civil Protection Orders (CPO)?

Protection Orders issued by the Municipal or Common Pleas Courts in a criminal case are temporary. They expire at the end of the case or sentencing of the defendant.

Civil Protection Orders issued by the Domestic Relations Court can last up to five years and may be renewed. Civil Protection Orders issued by the Domestic Relations Court can also address issues of custody, division of property and financial support.

A defendant in a domestic violence or similar case can be arrested for violating either.

2. Can anyone help me obtain a Protection Order?

Yes, the Domestic Violence Unit/Shelter Advocacy Freedom and Empowerment (SAFE) Program, the Victim Assistance Program and the Battered Women’s Shelter all regularly assist victims in understanding this area of law. For your convenience, we have provided telephone contact information for all three.

3. What time is curfew?

Between the hours of 11 p.m. - 5 a.m., Sunday - Thursday.
Between the hours of Midnight - 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Listed curfew times apply, unless the minor is accompanied by a parent, guardian or other responsible adult over the age of 21 who has been given permission by the parent or guardian.

4. How many drinks can I have before I become legally intoxicated?

There is no reliable means to predict how many alcoholic beverages an individual can consume before becoming “drunk” or impaired.

There are many variables to be considered. To name a few:
- Amount of alcoholic content in a drink
- Amount of drinks consumed
- Over what period of time the drinks were consumed
- Weight and build of the consumer

It is always wiser to have a designated driver or to call a cab anytime you have consumed alcohol and intend to operate a vehicle.

5. Who do I call if my utilities have gone out?

The Police Department can not tell you when your utilities will be restored. We encourage you to contact your providers to inquire about restoration of service times, and have provided some contact information to assist you.

6. Who do I call if I have lost my dog, or found a dog?

Contact the Police Department's non-emergency number at 330-633-2181 and give information to the on-duty Dispatcher.

Dispatch maintains a log of lost/found animals and can provide further information or assistance.

7. I am going on vacation. Will the Tallmadge Police Department watch my house while I am away?

The Auxiliary Officers provide vacation watches in the form of an exterior security inspection of your home while you are away. If a problem is observed, contact will be made with the key holder that you designate.

8. When I call 911 for emergency assistance, who answers the phone?

In August 2008, the Tallmadge Communications Center was moved to the city of Stow.

Stow telecommunicators answer both 911 and non-emergency 330-633-2181 calls.

9. I am receiving harassing telephone calls at my home or work. What should I do?

Make a police report with the department. At that time, you will be provided with a police report number and referred to the annoyance bureau of your phone company.

With the report number, the phone company will initiate a trap/trace on your land line phone for a set period of time, and the results will be forwarded to the Police Department upon completion. Cellular phone related matters should be referred to your provider.

To aid prosecution, keep a notepad by your phone to record the days and times the harassing calls occur so the phone company or prosecutor can match the offender's phone number to the tap records.

10. How do I find out if someone has an active warrant?

You can access public records that contain warrant information through the Stow Municipal Court by calling 330-564-4200, and the Summit County Clerk of Courts by calling 330-643-7772.

Additionally, public records can be viewed online at the Stow Municipal Court website and the Summit County Clerk of Courts website.

11. How can I find out if someone is in jail, when someone in jail can be visited, or any other information about persons in jail?

The Tallmadge City Jail is a temporary holding facility. Prisoners at Tallmadge will generally be bonded out or transported to the Summit County Jail.
